Coming & Going
July begins with a bit of movement personnel wise. For starters Fr. John Eudes spent a week or so at St. John's Abbey, Collegeville, MN participating in a seminar for junior monks and their formators. While he was away Msgr. Krieg, one of the ecclesiastical judges of the tribunal of the Rochester diocese, spent a few days in retreat with the community.

Edgar Aparacio and Br. EdwardOn July 3rd we happily welcomed Edgar Aparicio in our midst as an observer. Edgar, originally from El Salvador, is a Canadian citizen currently living and working in Toronto. As an observer he will be observing all aspects of our life including, of course, bakery work, during most of July.

Here we see him, on the left, diligently observing his guardian angel, Br. Edward, introduce him into the secrets of dough trough maintenance after the day's bake.

Guardian angel? Newcomers to monastic life are given a brother to help him find his way about the place and to be at the right place at the right time, as much as possible, fittingly called a guardian angel.

Monks Evacuated
The following news item appeared on a Benedictine web site: One of the wildfires in California that threatens the Big Sur area has forced the evacuation of New Camaldoli Hermitage, located on the coast near Lucia on Highway 1 that is closed to traffic. The monks have moved to a location outside of Santa Cruz. Updated information about the Basin Complex Fire, including a summary of the evacuation order, can be found online at Central Coast Public Radio <www.kusp.org/>. Our prayers these days are with the brothers there as well as all others effected by the wildfires.

Coming Attractions
CISTOPEDIA! A Joint Project of the Cistercian Family. For particulars see the OCSO page.

Saint Benedict

Another coming attraction is the solemnity of St. Benedict this Friday, July 11th. Since it is not a bake day for us we'll be keeping the day as a full solemnity in fitting commemoration of the Patriarch of Western Monasticism. For a brief bio see St. Benedict.

Lectio Notebook

When we are still talking about someone 1,500 years after his lifetime, when we even refer to him with titles like Father of Western Civilization or Patron of Europe, he must have been a remarkable person. But when we look back into history and try to present a picture of Benedict we are quickly disappointed.

The historical data about Benedict's life and work are uncertain and do not yield enough information to allow us a clear picture of this man. The person of Benedict constantly escapes our grasp. We cannot produce as clear a depiction as we can of, for example, St. Francis of Assisi.

What stands in the foreground is not the person of Benedict, but his work. Benedict himself disappears behind the work; his life continues in his rule for monasteries, the Regula Benedicti (Rule of Benedict). Through it he continues his effectiveness, and even today he shapes the lives of thousands of male and female monastics throughout the world.

Benedict has shaped a model of life that has been accepted over and over again through the centuries with gratitude and is seen as a way for human beings to mature as disciples of Christ.
